Green Practices with Google Cloud & Wabion on 22.04.2021
At the online Wabion Sustainability Summit on April 22nd, 2021, Plant-for-the-Planet, Google Cloud and Wabion planted 420 more trees. Green Practices with Google Cloud enables Google Cloud partners and customers to leverage leading technologies, reduce their carbon footprint and save costs.

Stop talking, start planting – Wabion is in!
Right at the beginning, 12-year-old Johannes, ambassador for climate justice of Plant-for-the-Planet, set off a rhetorical firework for the fight against the climate crisis and forcefully showed why companies must act now:
- Since the beginning of industrialisation, the continuous rise in global temperatures is having devastating consequences such as floods, droughts, etc. Johannes therefore speaks of climate crisis, not climate change.
- We only have about 24 years to prevent the global temperature from rising by 2 degrees Celsius with today’s C02 emissions.
- The bad news: we are doing far too little to prevent the catastrophe.
- The good news: we can do much more! The Paris Climate Agreement is a first step towards limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The average global temperature has risen by 1.2 degrees Celsius in the last 5 years though. We need to do more!
That is why Johannes is committed to Plant-for-the Planet. The NGO supports reforestation projects all over the world, because trees bind CO2 from the atmosphere and thus, also reduces the rise in temperature. With the ‘Trillion Tree Campaign‘, Plant-for-the-Planet plants 1,000 billion trees.
Wabion participates in Plant-for-the-Planet’s ‘Trillion Tree Campaign’: As part of the project to reforest Yucatán, Mexico, we have already planted more than 1,500 of the targeted 2,500 trees, including for every participant of the Wabion Sustainability Summit and every new LinkedIn follower up to the 1,000 mark.
Your sustainable cloud journey with Google Cloud
No company uses more renewable energy than Google. Since 2017, Google has been buying more renewable energy than the global Google infrastructure consumes. However, since solar and wind energy are irregularly available, Google also occasionally purchases energy from non-renewable sources. By 2030, this is to be finally put to an end – and Google will become CO2-free without exception.
But Google is not limiting itself to its own services. As Matthias Schorer, Lead for Sustainability in DACH, explained in his presentation, Google also provides leading technologies so that not least Google Cloud Partners and customers can make their own contribution in the fight against the climate crisis:
- Google Maps: Both private and business users can use the proven localisation service to find not only the fastest route, but also the greenest one.
- Project Sunroof: Based on Google Maps and Google’s unique AI expertise, this Google initiative allows private households, public authorities and companies to calculate the potential for solar energy on the roofs of their region.
- Environmental Insights Explorer: Also based on Google Maps and ML insights, emissions in cities can be calculated – and used as a basis for CO2 reduction strategies.
- Global Forest Watch: With a network of cloud-based servers that evaluates 650,000 images on 10,000 computers working in parallel, the Google Earth Engine forms the basis of this initiative of the World Resources Institute to monitor the condition of the planet’s forests. With projects like Plant-for-the-Planet, the bottom line will hopefully be positive in the future.
- Google Cloud Region Picker: Google Cloud customers can combine sustainability-oriented goals (carbon footprint) with other criteria (latency, pricing, etc.) when choosing a data centre and thus define the optimal solution for their workloads.
