Weiss+Appetito has been setting high standards in the construction industry since 1923. The group of companies, which is active in Switzerland, Germany, France and Austria, employs over 500 people in the fields of building reconstructions, floors & floring, energy & renovations, conduit construction, suction & pressure blowing, special transports and telecommunications. Thanks to differentiation and specialization, Weiss+Appetito continued to increase sales even in the challenging year 2020.
In order to lay the foundation for future growth at home and abroad, the group of companies, headquartered in Bern, evaluated various public cloud providers in 2016. After Google Cloud had won the race against two other large hyperscalers, Wabion successfully accompanied Weiss+Appetito during the introduction of Google Workspace. The multinational group not only received a uniform and secure collaboration solution, but also reduced group-wide IT costs by 30%. Moving to Google Workspace paid off in 2020 in particular:
The consistently positive cloud experience with Google Workspace reinforced Weiss+Appetito in their decision to move database servers, the ERP solution and central applications from various business areas to the Google Cloud after the contracts for the previous on-prem solution had expired. Weiss+Appetito pursued several goals:
As an international group of companies with different divisions and a mobile workforce, Weiss+Appetito builds on a central, stable and scalable IT infrastructure as a growth driver. Wabion already accompanied the successful migration to Google Workspace and still supports Weiss+Appetito with expertise in all areas of Google Cloud.
Wabion is a leading Google Cloud Premier Partner in German-speaking countries and has assisted growth champions such as Gamaya and Ricardo, the largest online marketplace in Switzerland, with the move from on-prem IT resources to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Based on this experience and Google Best Practices, Wabion has developed its own methodology for the successful migration of workloads and applications to GCP:
Wabion’s proven approach for lift & shift migrations, which also served as a guideline for the further migration steps of Weiss+Appetito. Depending on the workload, the IT team from Weiss+Appetito went through the various phases more or less independently – and could draw on the experts from Wabion for all open questions.
Following Wabion’s approach, Weiss+Appetito managed to move the database servers, central applications in HR, finance and transport as well as the ERP solution to the GCP – with the support of the experts from Wabion if required. Today, Weiss+Appetito has an IT infrastructure that is almost exclusively based on GCP and combines various GCP products such as:
As with the switch to Google Workspace, the further integration steps with Google Cloud have also paid off:
Weiss+Appetito underlines that Google Cloud covers the needs of the construction industry. Specially diversified, internationally active companies benefit from this in several ways:
Just like Wabion, “Cloud First” rules at Weiss + Appetito. But even if the company already operates almost its entire IT infrastructure in the Google Cloud, the cloud journey goes on. With the increased use of Cloud Router to optimize the interaction of GCP with remaining on-prem resources, the switch to cloud-native development (after Lift & Shift) as well as the integration of new subsidiaries into the group, the next phases are in progress.
